If you have had a baby, you have most likely strapped them into their rear facing car seat, without really thinking about why. Of course, you've probably been told that you should have your baby in a rear facing seat and just accepted that, without being told why. The reason is really very simple. If you put your baby in a front facing seat, they face the risk of spinal injury in a crash. Ideally, everyone would ride in a rear facing seat, to reduce the risk of injury. Obviously, that is not practical. How do expect to drive a car while you're looking out the rear window? So, adults need to face forward, but babies should face backwards for several reasons.
First of all, a rear facing seat offers an infant more protection in a frontal or offset frontal collision. It is true that a front facing seat would provide more protection in a rear or offset rear crash. But if you look at the statistics, frontal crashes are far more common. 72% of crashes are frontal or offset frontal collisions. 24% are side impact crashes, and a mere 4% of collisions are rear crashes. Just on those numbers, it makes the most sense to put a baby in the rear facing car seat, since it offers the most protection from 72% of collisions.

Another thing to consider in crashes is the energy. You have two vehicles weighing 3000 pounds or more, traveling at 20-70 miles per hour, depending on whether you are on surface streets or on the freeway. The weight and speed of the cars means that there is quite a bit of energy that will be transferred to the occupants of the vehicles. If there is a rear collision, then either one car is stopped, and the other car crashes into it at low speed, or the two vehicles are traveling at roughly the same speed, and there will not be very much energy in the collision. In a frontal collision, however, there is a lot of energy transferred to the occupants of the vehicles. Both vehicles will be traveling at speed, and coming to a stop in a fraction of a second. Now, think about what happens when you stop suddenly. You tend to be pushed forward in your seat. The higher the speed, and the faster the vehicle stops, the more you will be pushed forward. That's why we have seatbelts and air bags. That's fine for adults. Our muscles, bones, and connective tissue are fully developed. If we have a seatbelt and airbags, we can survive that. A baby on the other hand is still developing. If a baby got thrown forward into a seat belt or harness, it could suffer significant injury. On the other hand, if the baby is secure in a rear facing seat, the baby would be cushioned by the back of the seat.
So for these reasons, your baby would be safest in a rear facing seat. Graco SnugRide 32 Car Seats are designed to keep your baby safe in a rear facing seat until they reach 32 pounds or 32 inches. Much longer than the 20 pounds that is recommended. They are also designed to meet or exceed U.S. crash test standards. So put your baby in a rear facing car seat, and keep them safe.
